Becoming an PADI Open Water Instructor

It’s somewhat official (I haven’t paid for my class yet) but I’m going to become a PADI Open Water Instructor. The IDC or Instructor Development Course begins in January of 2012 at the Sports Chalet in West Hills, Ca and runs for over a month at which point, assuming I pass all my exams I will be qualified to teach new, incoming students how to dive.

Here’s the breakdown of the PADI certification levels:

This diagram is a little weird in that it shows the Open Water Scuba Instructor and Assistant Instructor to be at the same level but in reality an Assistant Instructor (or AI) can’t do much more than sign off on students skills (something a Divemaster can’t do).

I’ve been a Divemaster for about 4 years now and I think it’s time to step up and teach students on my own and with other instructors. Hopefully Ryan will be joining me!
